Synopsis
Nightmare Alley (2021) is Guillermo del Toro's noir crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's the late 1930s. A drifter with no past attaches himself to a traveling carnival and learns how to fool a crowd.
Stan Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) picks up a fake mind-reading act from a washed-up mentalist and realizes that human gullibility pays better than any honest trade. He leaves the sawdust behind, reinvents himself as a high-society clairvoyant, then teams up with psychologist Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), whose manipulation runs deeper than any trick he knows. The bigger the con, the closer the fall. The cast also includes Toni Collette, Rooney Mara, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins and Ron Perlman.
This is del Toro's second take on William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel, and he drops his usual creatures for a cold study of greed and self-ruin.
