After hired thugs wreck the camp once again, a silent rider in a preacher's collar comes down the road. The miners call him Preacher and never ask his name. He takes their side, and as the scripture says, hell follows with him. Eastwood plays a man with no past, his back marked by old bullet scars, leaving it unclear to the end whether he is flesh or a ghost of vengeance. A young girl named Megan prays for a miracle at her dog's grave moments before the stranger appears.
