Mudbound

Mudbound (2017) is Dee Rees's drama you can watch online on iFILM. In the Mississippi Delta just after the war, two families, one white and one Black, share the same muddy cotton land and nothing close to equal footing on it.

Henry McAllan moves his relatives from Memphis to his father's farm, where his city-raised wife Laura sinks into the dirt and her father-in-law's cold stare. Nearby, the Jackson family works the soil as sharecroppers, with Hap and his wife Florence, played by Mary J. Blige. Two young men come home from the front: Henry's brother Jamie and the Jacksons' son Ronsel. Overseas they were treated as equals, and back home that memory turns dangerous. The careful friendship between them runs straight into the hatred soaked into the county.

Adapted from Hillary Jordan's novel, the story passes the narration among six voices. It earned several Academy Award nominations, including one for Mary J. Blige's song and for Rachel Morrison's camerawork, the first ever for a woman in that category. Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell round out the cast.
