Synopsis

Siberian Education (Educazione siberiana, 2013) is a crime drama featuring John Malkovich that you can watch online on iFILM. Italian filmmaker Gabriele Salvatores directed it, drawing on Nicolai Lilin's autobiographical book.

A remote settlement on the edge of the old Soviet Union, where the state once dumped its outlaws, has hardened into a closed clan with rules of its own. The outside world stays out, and outside law counts for nothing. A boy nicknamed Kolyma comes of age inside it, guided by Grandfather Kuzya, an aging elder who lives by the code of the "honest criminal." Malkovich plays that patriarch. Beside Kolyma stands his childhood friend Gagarin, and the two drift toward open enmity as each reads the brotherhood's code his own way.

Shot in Lithuania in a blend of English and local dialects, the film carries a bleak, otherworldly texture. At heart it's a coming-of-age story where belonging to your own people can cost you your conscience. Stream Siberian Education (2013) online on iFILM.
