Synopsis
Stuart: A Life Backwards (2007) is a British television drama directed by David Attwood — watch it online on iFILM. Writer Alexander meets Stuart Shorter, a homeless man with a long history of addiction and violence, while working on a campaign to free two charity workers from prison. What starts as a professional connection becomes something neither of them expected.
Stuart asks Alexander to write his biography — but told backwards, from the present toward childhood, searching for the moment everything went wrong. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Alexander with quiet restraint; Tom Hardy plays Stuart as a live wire, unpredictable and oddly compelling, in a performance that feels less like acting than like direct testimony. The screenplay adapts Alexander Masters's 2005 book of the same name.
Produced for BBC Two, the film is a portrait of friendship across an enormous social distance — honest about what it costs both men, and in no hurry to offer easy conclusions. Stream Stuart: A Life Backwards (2007) online on iFILM.
