Synopsis
Stardust Memories (1980) — watch online on iFILM: Woody Allen's black-and-white comedy-drama about a celebrated filmmaker who has grown tired of the very fame he chased. Allen directs and stars as Sandy Bates, a director surrounded by adoring fans he can't stand.
At a weekend retrospective of his own films, Sandy is swarmed — fans thrust notes at him, critics over-explain his symbolism, producers push for more jokes. His mind drifts instead to three women who shaped him: the volatile Dorrie, played by Charlotte Rampling; the gentle Isobel, played by Marie-Christine Barrault; and a new love, Daisy, played by Jessica Harper. Memory bleeds into fantasy, and past into present, until the line between Sandy Bates and Woody Allen himself collapses entirely.
Shot in lush black-and-white by Gordon Willis, the film is Allen's deliberate riff on Fellini's 8½ — and his sharpest, most discomforting argument about what audiences demand from artists. Divisive on release, it rewards patience. Stream Stardust Memories (1980) on iFILM.
