First Man

First Man (2018) is Damien Chazelle's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong across the decade that ended with his boot pressing into lunar dust.

The film cares less about rockets than about what they cost. Armstrong buries a young daughter, then loses friends in test crashes and on the launchpad, and answers grief by climbing back into another cockpit. At home, Janet (Claire Foy) is sick of hearing about her husband's odds from NASA before he tells her himself. Chazelle shoots the flights from inside the rattling capsule, all groaning metal and shaking rivets, so a trip to the Moon feels claustrophobic instead of glorious.

Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke and Corey Stoll round out the crew, with the script drawn from James R. Hansen's biography. The movie won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Stream First Man (2018) online on iFILM.
