Synopsis
My Oni Girl (好きでも嫌いなあまのじゃく, 2024) is a Japanese animated adventure film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tomotaka Shibayama. A teenage boy with a pathological inability to say no gets recruited — there is no softer word for it — by a headstrong oni girl who needs a travel companion for her search through a mystical realm blanketed in midsummer snow.
He is painfully shy and completely unprepared. She is relentless and comes from a world that operates by different rules. The goal is to find her missing mother, but the road keeps complicating itself in the way that roads in good animated films always do. Voice cast features Kensho Ono and Miyu Tomita across a runtime of 112 minutes.
Released by Netflix, the film earns its runtime by treating its central contradiction seriously: two people who grate on each other choosing, again and again, to keep going together. The original Japanese title translates roughly to "like and dislike, the contrary spirit" — which is a more honest description of how this friendship works than any summary can be.
