The Wonderland

The Wonderland (バースデー・ワンダーランド, 2019) is a Japanese animated fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM. The day before her birthday, a self-doubting girl named Akane discovers a mysterious alchemist named Hippocrates and his apprentice Pipo hiding in her aunt's basement. They tell her she is the prophesied saviour of their world. Mayu Matsuoka voices Akane; the film was directed by Keiichi Hara.

Akane doesn't quite believe them, but she goes anyway. What she finds is a hand-drawn world built for looking at: rich colour, intricate detail, light that shifts the way it does in the best Studio Ghibli-adjacent features. The story moves at a deliberate pace and doesn't feel compelled to explain every rule of its universe.
