Theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) takes charge of a classified program tucked into the New Mexico desert: thousands of scientists, engineers and military personnel assembled at Los Alamos to build a weapon capable of leveling a city with a single detonation. General Groves (Matt Damon) pushes for speed; Oppenheimer's wife Kitty (Emily Blunt) watches what the work does to him; politician Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.) nurses a grievance that will surface years later. Niels Bohr (Kenneth Branagh), Edward Teller (Benny Safdie) and Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) are rendered as full characters, not background figures.

The story splits between the wartime race to test the device and the post-war security hearings where Oppenheimer's prewar associations put everything at risk. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot portions on 65mm IMAX film stock, and composer Ludwig Göransson's score was described by reviewers as something felt as much as heard. At the 96th Academy Awards the film took seven Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actor for Murphy, Supporting Actor for Downey Jr., Cinematography, Editing and Original Score.
