Veterinary student Jacob (Robert Pattinson) loses his parents days before his final exams and ends up with nothing. He hops a passing freight train that turns out to belong to the Benzini Brothers circus, and they take him on to care for the animals. There he meets Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), the show's star rider. The catch: she's married to August (Christoph Waltz), the troupe's owner, all charm in the ring and cruelty behind it. When an elephant named Rosie enters the act, the fragile balance under the big top begins to crack.
