Onward

Onward (2020) is the Pixar animated fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. It's set in a world of elves, trolls and unicorns who long ago traded spellbooks for cars, smartphones and unpaid bills. Magic faded out, and the realm settled into a dull suburb.

On his sixteenth birthday, shy elf Ian Lightfoot inherits his late father's wizard staff and a spell that can bring Dad back for a single day. The ritual misfires halfway through, conjuring only the lower half of his father. So Ian and his loud, quest-obsessed older brother Barley set off in a battered van named Guinevere to find a second magic gem before sunset, hoping to meet the rest of their dad in time. Tom Holland voices Ian, Chris Pratt plays Barley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is their mother, and Octavia Spencer voices a once-fearsome Manticore who's gone soft.

Director Dan Scanlon drew on his own life: his father died when Dan was a baby. That's why this plays less like a dragon tale and more like a road movie about two brothers and the ache of missing a parent you barely knew. The ending hits harder than you'd expect.
