Synopsis
Dark City (1998) is Alex Proyas's sci-fi noir, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A man comes to in a hotel bathtub next to a dead woman, with no memory of who he is.
His name is John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell), and everyone wants him. Inspector Frank Bumstead (William Hurt) is convinced he is a killer. The twitchy Dr. Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland) clearly knows the truth and keeps stalling. And then there are the Strangers — pale, bald figures in long coats who freeze the city at midnight, rearrange its streets, and rewrite people's memories like edits to a manuscript. Somewhere out there waits a wife, Emma (Jennifer Connelly), Murdoch cannot recall.
Released years before Inception toyed with the same questions, the film treats memory as something that can be bought, stolen and forged. Roger Ebert ranked it his favorite of 1998 and recorded a full commentary track for it.
