Edward falls for Eliza Graves, committed after she struck back at a brutal husband. The longer he stays, the thinner the line grows between doctor and inmate, until the truth about who really controls Stonehearst turns out to be worse than any illness. Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine and Brendan Gleeson carry the slow burn.

Director Brad Anderson (The Machinist) builds on Edgar Allan Poe's tale "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether," shaping a tight, candlelit puzzle with a nasty twist.
