The boy is alive but won't wake. Once Dalton is brought back home, the haunting only sharpens — footsteps, voices, figures that shouldn't be there. Help arrives through medium Elise Rainier, a quietly commanding turn from Lin Shaye, who reveals that Dalton's mind has drifted into a spirit realm called The Further — and something there wants his empty body.

Wan and writer Leigh Whannell, the team behind the first Saw, built a scare machine with almost no gore, trading shock for dread. Composer Joseph Bishara wrote the shrieking-string score and also played the lead demon himself.
