Synopsis
Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) is an American biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director John Frankenheimer built the film around Robert Stroud — a lifer held in solitary for killing a prison guard — who spent decades studying birds inside federal penitentiaries and wound up cited in ornithological literature. Burt Lancaster earned an Academy Award nomination for the role.
Stroud's world shrank to four walls and silence. Then a wounded sparrow landed in the exercise yard. He nursed it back, then another, then dozens more. With barely a third-grade education he documented bird diseases and developed treatments that eventually reached veterinary textbooks. Thelma Ritter plays his devoted mother, Karl Malden the warden who opposed his research, and a young Telly Savalas in one of his earliest notable parts.
Frankenheimer keeps the focus tight: not the mythology of Alcatraz, not the violence, but the question of what a person does with fifty years in a cell. Stroud's answer turned out to be science. Stream Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) online on iFILM.
