Retired sheriff George Blackledge and his wife Margaret are quietly seeing out their years on a Montana ranch. Then their son dies, and the calm shatters. Their widowed daughter-in-law remarries and carries the little boy off to the backroads of the Dakotas, into the orbit of the Weboys, a clan that lives by its own rules far from anyone's eyes. Margaret decides the child has to be brought back. George follows, knowing exactly what they're walking into. Matriarch Blanche Weboy greets her visitors with a smile that has steel underneath it.

Director Thomas Bezucha adapted Larry Watson's novel, and the result isn't a shoot-'em-up but a slow, tightening Western about how far parents will go for a child.
