Enemy Mine

Far out at the edge of the galaxy, humans are locked in a war with a reptilian species called the Dracs. During a dogfight, pilot Willis Davidge shoots down an enemy craft, then crashes himself onto a barren, hostile planet.

It turns out the alien he downed survived too. Two sworn enemies end up stranded on the same rock under a double sun, where the only way to live is to do it together. At first Davidge (Dennis Quaid) and the Drac, Jeriba Shigan (Louis Gossett Jr.), would gladly kill each other. But hunger, cold and isolation wear them down. Hatred slowly gives way to something neither expected, and then Shigan reveals a secret that changes the human's life completely.

Petersen, who made Das Boot, turns a sci-fi premise into a parable about enmity that is taught rather than felt, and brotherhood found against the odds. It is based on the novella by Barry B.
