Synopsis
Enemy (2014) is Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A withdrawn history lecturer rents a forgettable movie and spots a bit-part actor on screen. The face is a stranger's, yet it's his own, down to every scar.
Adam starts tracking the double, a man named Anthony, and slowly works his way into the other man's apartment, his wife, his routines. Jake Gyllenhaal plays both men, and telling them apart gets harder by the scene. Mélanie Laurent and Sarah Gadon play the two women thrown off balance by the swap. The city sits under a sickly yellow haze, and a spider keeps creeping into the corner of the frame.
The film adapts José Saramago's novel The Double and marks the first pairing of Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal, who had shot Prisoners a year earlier. People still argue about the closing shot, while the director has called it a study of the subconscious rather than a mystery with a tidy answer. Stream Enemy (2014) online on iFILM.
