Synopsis
Girls State (2024) is an American documentary from directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine — watch it online on iFILM. Each year in Missouri, the American Legion Auxiliary runs a week-long civics program where high school girls design a state government from scratch: campaigns, floor debates, a statewide election.
Moss and McBaine trail eight participants with clashing politics and very different life stories — a conservative Christian, a progressive activist, daughters of immigrants, small-town students aiming for law school. The camera stays close when things get uncomfortable, and this one gets uncomfortable often.
The two made Boys State in 2020, which took the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Documentary. Girls State is the companion, and also the more complicated conversation — about ambition that teenage girls are still socialized to downplay.
