Steven mentors the boy, buys him gifts, invites him to dinner. The kindness hides guilt — Martin's father died on Steven's operating table. Colin Farrell plays the doctor who needs to manage everything; Nicole Kidman is his wife Anna, and Barry Keogan is Martin, whose politeness curdles into something quietly menacing. The boy lays out a condition the family cannot pay off or outrun.

Lanthimos shoots it in a flat, almost robotic register — characters speak like machines, the camera glides down empty corridors, and dread builds out of nothing. The script reworks the Greek myth of Iphigenia and a sacrifice the gods demand. It premiered in competition at Cannes and shared the festival's Best Screenplay prize.
