Synopsis
Cheaters (2000) is an American TV drama directed by John Stockwell — watch it online on iFILM. In the fall of 1994, a teacher at Chicago's underfunded Steinmetz High gets hold of leaked exam questions for the state Academic Decathlon and decides that the game is already rigged. If the wealthy schools have every advantage, what exactly is the moral cost of using what fell into his lap?
Jeff Daniels plays the teacher with enough conviction to make the logic feel genuinely difficult, not just rationalized. Jena Malone is the student at the centre of it — perceptive and conflicted in a way that goes well past the usual high school movie template. Paul Sorvino rounds out the principal cast on the side of the institution pushing back.
The film is grounded in a real 1994 incident, and it doesn't clean up the ethics at the end. When Steinmetz is stripped of their title, the debate about who cheated whom doesn't stop — it just gets louder. Stream Cheaters (2000) on iFILM.
