Rimini

Rimini (2022) is Ulrich Seidl's drama you can watch online on iFILM. An Italian resort town in winter, emptied of tourists, a grey sea and shuttered hotels. And an aging schlager singer, Richie Bravo, crooning long-outdated hits for busloads of pensioners.

The fame is gone and so is the money. Richie (Michael Thomas) trades on what charm he has left: the same women who come to his concerts also pay him for company in bed. His life coasts on autopilot between booze and gigs — until his grown daughter shows up in Rimini, wanting back every year he failed to pay for. Meanwhile his father waits out his last days in a care home, still clinging to a fascist past.

Seidl shoots without softening and without mercy: a static camera, long takes, the unguarded body of an older man filling the frame. This one isn't for everybody — cold, uncomfortable, honest to the point of squirming, made for viewers who go for European arthouse realism. The film opened the competition at the Berlinale.
