Diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at eighteen, Susanna signs herself in for what she thinks is a brief rest and stays nearly two years. The ward is full of damaged, vivid young women: a compulsive liar, a girl who hides chicken under her bed, another who burns herself. Then there's Lisa, a charismatic sociopath who pulls everyone into her orbit and dares them to follow. Angelina Jolie won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the part.

Set against the late 1960s, Woodstock and Vietnam humming in the background, the film also features Brittany Murphy, Clea DuVall, Elisabeth Moss, Jared Leto, Whoopi Goldberg and Vanessa Redgrave.
