Cody Griffin turns thirteen and things get weird fast. Scales on his arms. Fins where there definitely weren't fins before. His adoptive parents have some explaining to do — because it turns out his birth mother was a mermaid, and the transformation is right on schedule. Cody now has to figure out how to control abilities that activate at the worst possible moments, keep his grades up, and somehow impress Samantha without revealing that he is, technically, becoming an amphibian.
