Synopsis
Real Women Have Curves (2002) is an American comedy-drama directed by Patricia Cardoso that you can watch online on iFILM. America Ferrera makes her feature debut as Ana, an 18-year-old from East Los Angeles whose sharp mind just landed her a Columbia University scholarship — and whose mother expects her to stay home, get married, and work the family sewing factory.
Ana spends her days stitching designer dresses for women she'll never meet, fielding her mother's running commentary on her body, and trying to figure out how much she owes to family before she owes anything to herself. The film doesn't make the mother a villain. Carmen loves her daughter; she just can't see past what she was taught to want for her.
At 90 minutes, the film earns its emotional punches without working too hard for them. It was one of the first mainstream American pictures to center a Latina character with complexity rather than function — and Ferrera carries it all without straining.
