Synopsis
Mother (마더, 2009) is a South Korean crime drama wrapped in a mystery from director Bong Joon-ho, and you can watch online for one of the fiercest performances in Asian cinema. The story follows an aging woman in a small town who sells herbs and dabbles in folk medicine. Her whole life rests on one thing: her grown son, played by Won Bin.
The young man is gentle and slow, easy to push around, and when a local girl is found murdered the police pin it on him almost overnight. The case is closed for everyone's convenience, the lawyer is useless, and the boy himself cannot say what really happened that night. So his mother, played by Kim Hye-ja, sets out to clear him on her own — not out of curiosity, but because losing him is the one outcome she will not survive. She will knock on any door and cross any line.
Bong Joon-ho, who would later make Parasite, shaped a hard, deeply uneasy film about a love that recognizes no limits. There are no clean heroes here, and every turn rewrites what you thought you understood a moment ago. The film screened at Cannes and cemented his reputation as a master of mixing genres. Stream Mother (2009) online on iFILM if you like smart, tense cinema that pulls no punches.
