Drag Me to Hell

Christine Brown handles loans at a Los Angeles bank. She has a caring boyfriend, professor Clay, and a shot at the assistant manager job. Hoping to impress her boss, she denies elderly Mrs. Ganush an extension on her mortgage and has her thrown out. The old woman strikes back, siccing a vicious spirit called the Lamia on her: three days of torment, then her soul gets dragged straight down below. Clay refuses to believe in any curse, so Christine turns to a psychic who claims he can break the hex before it claims her.

After the Spider-Man blockbusters, Raimi went back to his roots with a gleefully nasty scare ride full of slapstick gore and pitch-black humor, all squeezed into a PG-13 rating. Alison Lohman plays Christine, Justin Long her skeptical boyfriend, and Lorna Raver the terrifying Mrs. Ganush. It runs a tight 99 minutes and ends on a gut-punch.
