Synopsis
The Holdovers (2023) — watch online on iFILM. Director Alexander Payne's drama is set in December 1970 at Barton Academy, a New England prep school emptied out for the holidays. Three people are left behind: history teacher Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), troublemaker student Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), and head cook Mary Lamb (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), who just got word her son didn't make it back from Vietnam.
Hunham thinks Angus is a lost cause. Angus thinks Hunham is a cold machine. Neither is entirely wrong. Over two weeks in an empty dormitory, the three of them collide, irritate, and slowly surprise each other. Screenplay by David Hemingson; score by Mark Orton. Shot on 35mm to look and feel like a film from the era it depicts.
At the 2024 Academy Awards, Da'Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress — a performance that runs almost entirely on silence and small gestures. Two BAFTA wins followed: Best Casting and Best Supporting Actress. Stream The Holdovers (2023) online on iFILM.
