Synopsis
The Counselor (2013) is Ridley Scott's crime thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. A successful lawyer on the verge of marriage agrees to dip into the drug trade just once.
On paper the deal is clean: help move a shipment of cocaine from Mexico into the States, take a cut, walk away. Michael Fassbender's Counselor never grasps how fast a single mistake compounds. Around him circle the flashy middleman Reiner (Javier Bardem), the unflappable Westray (Brad Pitt) and Malkina (Cameron Diaz), whose motives stay hardest to read. His fiancée Laura (Penélope Cruz) knows none of it.
The screenplay came from novelist Cormac McCarthy, his first written directly for the screen rather than adapted. That shows in the lean, almost philosophical talk about greed and the point past which there is no turning back.
