In the dying days of World War II, Nazi occultists and the resurrected Rasputin tear open a doorway and accidentally pull a baby demon into our world. Allied soldiers find the creature and name him Hellboy. Sixty years on, the red giant has filed down his horns and works for a secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. His mentor is Professor Bruttenholm, played by John Hurt. Beside him stand Abe Sapien, a psychic amphibious man, and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), who can burst into flame and struggles to control it. When forces darker than any demon claw their way back, Hellboy is the one thing standing in their path.

Del Toro shoots it his way: heavy practical makeup over wall-to-wall CGI, gothic texture, monsters with real personality. You will never spot Doug Jones under all that latex.
