Synopsis
The Book of Life (2014) is an animated fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Jorge Gutiérrez and produced by Guillermo del Toro, it spins a Mexican folk tale set on the Day of the Dead, where two ruling spirits wager on the fates of three childhood friends from the town of San Ángel.
Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna) dreams of playing music, but his bullfighting family pushes him toward the ring. His best friend Joaquín (Channing Tatum) wants to be a war hero, and both love the fearless María (Zoe Saldana). When the trickster Xibalba rigs Manolo's death, the young man must cross the Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten to return to the living. The voice cast also includes Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman and opera tenor Plácido Domingo.
Every character looks hand-carved, like a wooden marionette, and the palette burns with orange and turquoise borrowed from Mexican alebrije folk art. The film earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature. It's a bright, song-filled story about choosing your own heart over everyone else's plans.
