About

Synopsis

Moon (2009) is Duncan Jones's science-fiction drama you can watch online on iFILM. Sam Bell is finishing the last stretch of a three-year work contract on a lunar base, with no crew around him. His only company is GERTY, a station robot that talks through a little smiling screen.

The base harvests helium-3, the fuel that keeps Earth's power running. Sam is counting down the days until he ships home to his wife and daughter. Then an accident out on the surface changes everything. He wakes up to find another man on the base, someone who should not exist, and slowly realizes how little he was ever told about his job, his employer, or himself. Sam Rockwell carries nearly every frame alone, and the performance is the whole film.

This was Jones's first feature, made on a tiny budget with physical models instead of heavy CGI and a cold, looping score by Clint Mansell. It won the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut and still turns up on lists of the smartest small-scale sci-fi. Stream Moon (2009) online on iFILM.
