Synopsis
The Weather Man (2005) is a Gore Verbinski tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. Nicolas Cage plays Dave Spritz, a Chicago TV weatherman whose career keeps rising while everything personal falls apart.
People recognize Dave on the street, though sometimes they hurl fast food at him instead of asking for an autograph. The pay is good, the job is easy, and he knows it: he just reads forecasts someone else writes. His marriage is over, his daughter has gone quiet, his son has fallen in with the wrong crowd, and his father, a celebrated author played by Michael Caine, is dying and quietly disappointed in him. Then a national show in New York comes calling, and Dave has to figure out what he actually wants.
Verbinski, fresh off Pirates of the Caribbean, switches gears completely here, trading spectacle for dry, melancholy comedy. Cold Chicago wind, archery and tossed fast food become blunt little metaphors for a stalled adult life. Hope Davis and a young Nicholas Hoult round out the cast.
