Casablanca

Casablanca (1942) is the wartime romance you can watch online on iFILM. The war is on, and every night a desperate crowd fills a Moroccan port city, chasing the exit visas that might carry them west. Michael Curtiz directs.

Rick Blaine runs the bar with the roulette wheel and the piano. He keeps out of everyone's quarrel on principle, until the one woman he loved and lost walks back through his door. Ilsa hasn't come alone. Her husband, resistance leader Victor Laszlo, has German agents on his trail, and Rick happens to hold the letters of transit that could get Laszlo out of the city. Now he has to choose who walks free. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman carry the whole picture on a single look, while Claude Rains plays a police captain whose conscience wakes up very slowly.

Shot almost entirely on Warner Bros. soundstages, the film took home three Academy Awards, for Best Picture, director and screenplay. Half of its most quoted lines were handed to the cast on the day of filming. The ending was still being rewritten as they shot, and nobody on set quite knew which man Ilsa would leave with.
