Synopsis

The Rain People (1969) is an early Francis Ford Coppola drama you can watch online on iFILM — made years before The Godfather, when the director was still working with a small crew and open American highways. Shirley Knight, James Caan and Robert Duvall lead the cast.

Natalie is married, comfortable, living in New York. When she finds out she's pregnant, she gets in her car before her husband wakes up and just drives. No note. No plan. The road is the point. Along the way she picks up Jimmy — a former college football player, gentle and childlike after a serious head injury — and what started as a solo escape turns into something she didn't bargain for: responsibility for someone who never asked to be her problem.

Coppola shot the film on location across the country, almost like a documentary crew chasing the story. The result is quietly uncomfortable — a portrait of a woman reaching for freedom and finding that freedom has its own weight.
