Synopsis
The Conversation (1974) is Francis Ford Coppola's mystery drama you can watch online on iFILM. Harry Caul, the West Coast's finest surveillance man, taps one ordinary couple and, for the first time, can't walk away from what he hears.
The assignment looked routine: record two people strolling across a crowded San Francisco square. Caul builds a clean track from a row of hidden mics, scrubbing the crowd noise pass after pass. Then a few muffled words start to sound like the planning of a murder. A man who lived by one iron rule, never ask what the client does with the tape, begins picking apart both the recording and his own guilt. Gene Hackman plays a loner sealed off from everyone: a bare apartment, three locks on the door, not one honest word even for the woman he sees.
John Cazale, Harrison Ford and Robert Duvall appear in supporting roles. Coppola made the film between the first two Godfather pictures, and it took the Palme d'Or at Cannes along with three Academy Award nominations. The closing shot, Caul tearing his own home apart hunting for a bug, has been quoted ever since. Stream The Conversation (1974) online on iFILM.
