FBI agent Tom Greer catches a case that should be impossible: a weapon kills someone's surrogate and the human operator dies too, slumped in a control chair miles away. To follow the trail, Greer has to do what he hasn't in years — unplug, step outside in his own aging body, and chase a killer in the real world. Around him are partner Jennifer Peters (Radha Mitchell), his wife Maggie (Rosamund Pike), who hides behind a perfect copy, and the technology's reclusive inventor, played by James Cromwell.

Adapted from the graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, the film asks a blunt question: what is left of a person when a machine does the living.
