Synopsis
Free State of Jones (2016) is a historical war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Gary Ross tells the story of a poor Southern farmer who turns his rifle against the Confederacy, with Matthew McConaughey in the lead.
Mississippi, the 1860s. Newt Knight patches up the wounded as a Confederate medic, but he has no stomach for a rich man's war over slavery. When his young nephew is killed, Knight walks away from the army and heads home — and the army brands him a deserter. He hides deep in the swamps, where runaway slaves have made their own refuge. Knight throws in with them and a handful of fellow farmers, and the ragged band starts hitting back. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali and Keri Russell round out the cast.
The script draws on the real Newt Knight, whose corner of Mississippi all but seceded from the secession itself. The film refuses an easy ending: once the guns fall silent, the fight carries straight into the broken promises of Reconstruction. Stream Free State of Jones (2016) online on iFILM.
