The Black Phone

The Black Phone (2022) is a horror thriller from director Scott Derrickson that you can watch online on iFILM. A quiet Colorado suburb in 1978, and a child snatcher known only as The Grabber is loose.

Thirteen-year-old Finney Blake (Mason Thames) wakes up in a soundproof basement. The door won't budge, no one hears him scream, and a disconnected phone hangs on the wall. Then it rings. On the line are the boys the killer has already murdered, and each call hands Finney one more piece of an escape. Above ground his little sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) dreams things she shouldn't know and starts hunting for him on her own.

Ethan Hawke plays the abductor behind a shifting, half-built mask, far from his usual roles. The script comes from a Joe Hill short story, son of Stephen King, and Derrickson returns to dread after Sinister and Doctor Strange. The scares lean on 1970s childhood fear more than gore.
