Synopsis

Boxcar Bertha (1972) — watch online on iFILM Martin Scorsese's early crime drama, produced by Roger Corman's American International Pictures. Starring Barbara Hershey and David Carradine.

Arkansas, the hard early 1930s. Bertha Thompson loses her crop-duster father to a crash and finds herself adrift in a country that has run out of mercy. She falls in with Bill Shelly, a union man the railroad bosses have marked for trouble, and the two slide from protest into outright robbery — freight trains, back roads, a loose gang of outcasts moving fast through the Depression-era South. Carradine and Hershey were a real couple by the time filming wrapped; it shows on screen. The film launched Scorsese into the Hollywood system two years before Mean Streets changed everything.
