Synopsis

He ends up nursing drinks at a bar every night until Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) notices him — a effortlessly sharp guy who turns picking up women into an art form. Jacob overhauls Cal's wardrobe, posture, and bar game from scratch. Steve Carell plays Cal's disorientation without a single cheap joke; the character is genuinely lost, and watching him slowly figure things out is what carries the film. Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, and Kevin Bacon fill in a web of connections that snaps together in the third act.
