Synopsis
"The Tree, the Mayor and the Mediatheque" (L'Arbre, le Maire et la Médiathèque, 1993) is a French political comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Éric Rohmer and starring Pascal Greggory, Fabrice Luchini and Arielle Dombasle.
A young socialist mayor of a small village secures Parisian funding for a large cultural-sports complex. The locals have reservations — they like the village the way it is. Then he loses a senate election, and what started as a planning dispute becomes a question of who gets to decide what a place should be.
Rohmer shot the film cheaply and fast, which gives it the same quality as the conversations in it: unforced, alert, happy to follow an argument wherever it goes. Not a film that announces itself, but one that lingers. Stream "The Tree, the Mayor and the Mediatheque" (1993) online on iFILM.
