The answer arrives in the form of Ego, a living planet who walks around in a human body — played by Kurt Russell. He seems to have all the right answers about Peter's past, which is precisely what makes him worth watching closely. Meanwhile, the rest of the team fractures in different directions: Gamora and her sister Nebula drag their brutal childhood into the open, Drax forms an odd friendship with the empath Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Rocket manages to antagonise almost everyone around him. Baby Groot just does whatever he wants.

The film runs 136 minutes, opened in May 2017 and earned over $860 million worldwide. Sylvester Stallone joins the cast as Stakar Ogord. Gunn pushed the tone toward something more personal than the first entry — the story is as much about chosen family and unresolved fathers as it is about spaceships and explosions.
