Passengers
There is a reason they woke up.
Synopsis
Passengers (2016) is a sci-fi romance directed by Morten Tyldum — watch it online on iFILM. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star as two people stranded aboard the Avalon, a luxury starship carrying five thousand colonists on a 120-year voyage to the planet Homestead II.
Jim Preston (Pratt), a mechanical engineer, wakes up 90 years too early when his hibernation pod malfunctions. The ship runs fine. Going back to sleep is not an option. He spends a year alone in a vessel built for passengers who are not awake, with no one to talk to except an android bartender (Michael Sheen). Then he makes a decision he cannot undo: he opens the pod of Aurora Lane (Lawrence), a journalist, and lets her believe the malfunction was random. They fall into something that looks like love. When she finds out what he actually did, the film shifts under the audience's feet.
Lawrence Fishburne plays a crew member who wakes by protocol as the ship's systems begin cascading toward catastrophe. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto frames the isolation in sweeping shots of the vessel against total darkness. The film earned more than $300 million at the global box office.
