Theodore writes intimate letters for a living — other people's love letters, other people's feelings. His own marriage just fell apart. He buys a new AI operating system, picks a female voice, and names her Samantha. Scarlett Johansson provides the voice: no body, no face, just words in an earpiece. The conversations start as convenient, then become necessary, then turn into something Theodore can't explain to anyone in his life. Rooney Mara plays his ex-wife in a handful of scenes that quietly explain everything he's running from. Spike Jonze doesn't ask whether this relationship is valid. He asks what happens when it ends.
