Synopsis
Making a Murderer (2015) is a true-crime documentary series you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos spent a decade in Wisconsin tracking the legal saga of Steven Avery — a man exonerated by DNA after eighteen years behind bars, then charged with murder almost immediately after his release.
The timing was staggering. Avery had just filed a thirty-six-million-dollar lawsuit against the county that wrongfully convicted him when investigators named him a suspect in the death of photographer Teresa Halbach. His nephew Brendan Dassey, a teenager, was separately interrogated without a lawyer and produced a confession that the defense calls coerced. The physical evidence, the police handling of the crime scene, the gaps in the case — all of it is laid out episode by episode.
Released on Netflix in December 2015, the series sparked a national conversation about wrongful convictions and the gaps in the American justice system. Attorney Kathleen Zellner has been fighting Avery's appeals ever since — the case is still open. Stream Making a Murderer online on iFILM.
