Synopsis
When They See Us (2019) is a Netflix limited series you can watch online on iFILM. Director Ava DuVernay reconstructed what happened to five Harlem teenagers who were coerced into confessing to a 1989 assault in Central Park — a crime they did not commit. The real perpetrator came forward more than a decade later.
Each of the four episodes follows one of the boys — Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, and their friends — from the night of the arrest through years of incarceration and the long, uneven road back to ordinary life. Jharrel Jerome, Ethan Herisse, Marquis Rodriguez, Caleel Harris, and Asante Black lead the cast; Vera Farmiga plays the prosecutor who drove the case.
In 2002 a New York court vacated all convictions, years after the sentences had already been served. DuVernay, who previously made the documentary 13th, turns the record into a precise examination of how race, power and institutional pressure combine inside the criminal justice system.
