Synopsis
American Vandal (2017) is a Netflix mockumentary series you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Tony Yacenda, it skewers the true crime documentary format by applying its full procedural weight to a high school prank — and somehow making it work as both a sharp parody and an actual whodunit.
Season one centers on Dylan Maxwell, played by Jimmy Tatro, who gets expelled for spray-painting obscene drawings on 27 teachers' cars. Two student filmmakers, Peter Malewski (Tyler Alvarez) and Sam (Griffin Gluck), decide the case deserves its own documentary investigation. Their findings raise real doubts. Season two moves the pair to a new school hit by a mysterious cafeteria poisoning — same earnest style, even messier crime.
Netflix ran two seasons in 2017 and 2018 before cancelling the show, which only added to its cult reputation. Critics flagged it as one of the smarter comedies of the decade: it nails the cadence, the talking-head interviews, the dramatic re-enactments — everything that makes true crime docs tick.
