After the war, Ip Man moves his family to Hong Kong and opens a school on a rooftop. There is no money, almost no students, and the city's established masters have no welcome for an outsider on their turf. To earn the right to teach, he must pass a trial set by the other schools and face Hung, the head of the local association, played by Sammo Hung. Their duel on a wobbling round table is one of the film's best scenes. Then a British boxing champion arrives, sneering at Chinese kung fu, and a personal grudge turns into a matter of pride.

Sammo Hung choreographed the fights; Kenji Kawai wrote the score. The film carries on the story of Bruce Lee's real teacher, though it plays loose, more folk legend than history lesson.
